Turn back the clock 60 years to a time when electrical safety awareness in the workplace was at its inception, and the largest public utilities in Canada were developing test methods for various types of high voltage apparatus and safety equipment, establishing many of the standards still followed in the electrical testing industry today. Lineman’s Testing Laboratories’ (“LTL”) founder, William (Bill) Burgess, was part of that team.

Years later, Bill and his business partner were to lay the foundation for the LTL we know today. Proudly, LTL has been trusted and relied upon since 1958 to deliver customized solutions for electrical safety within the workplace.

Today, LTL represents most industry leading manufacturers for the stock and supply of quality personal protective equipment, utility tools and related equipment designed to match the physical demands of the workers’ job, while ensuring their safety. Over the years, LTL’s NAIL-accredited high voltage laboratories have seen considerable expansion and today offer compliant testing, inspection, calibration and factory-authorized tool and equipment repair to applicable industry standards. LTL’s Power Technical Services Division continues to support its customers in effectively managing their electrical systems.

“We pride ourselves in staying abreast of new and changing legislation,” says Robert Burgess, President at LTL. To that end, our laboratories are NAIL-accredited, and our comprehensive electrical services are conducted in accordance to all applicable industry standards, including NETA. Aside from safety considerations, proper certification benefits customers’ bottom lines. “Equipment that is properly maintained lasts longer, is more likely to perform to its original manufacturer specifications, and is in a condition that minimizes the risk of interruption or harm to the worker,” adds Burgess.

Over the years, the LTL team has grown to include certified technologists, laboratory technicians, electrical engineers, linemen, master electricians as well as degreed business personnel, product specialists, facilitators and knowledgeable customer care representatives; many of whom have extensive industry experience.

“Our collective industry experience instills confidence in our customers knowing that we understand firsthand the risks and dangers associated with electrical work,” says Burgess.

Burgess on LTL’s 60th anniversary, “we would not be here today if not for the hard work and commitment of our employees; they have been instrumental in our growth and success.”

As an advocate for worker safety, LTL prides itself in being a go-to resource for education and legislative guidance. Following its founder’s footsteps, LTL is an active member of numerous associations for the promotion of safety awareness in the workplace, and is represented on the NAIL Board of Directors for the development of uniformity and setting standards in testing, and works in close association with ASTM and ANSI.

“It’s been a great journey and we are looking forward to building more relationships and expanding our services as we continue to grow and positively contribute to the utility and industrial sectors.” Burgess concludes.
